Michael Johnston has been studying corruption, democratization, and development for what seems like 102 years. Recent work has focused on contrasting syndromes of corruption, reflecting underlying development issues, and on ways of building foundations for reform through "deep democratization." As a young boy, growing up in a small town in southeast Iowa, Prof. Johnston dreamed that one day he would play right field for the St. Louis Cardinals. He failed.
