Responsible Men is about a charming, ethically challenged salesman, Max Wolinsky, who returns to Philadelphia on the eve of his son’s Bar Mitzvah, in his last-ditch effort of become a better father and a better son. If he can be civil to his ex-wife, listen to his son, and make one last scam (involving a troop of kosher boy scouts and a mysterious scoutmaster) work so his ailing father and uncle can live a better life, everything might turn out just right. But his risking everything in an unlikely business prospect leads to a surprising outcome. What makes Max cross over the line from responsible man to con man is at the heart of the novel; what makes him step back is the soul of the story. Moving and wise, Responsible Men gets inside the hearts of men in prose that rings with honesty, intelligence, and humanity. Early praise for the book has been uniformly positive. William Kennedy says “It’s a compassionately and deftly told story.” Elizabeth Graver says “….an extraordinary first novel, at once gritty and funny, tender and achingly sad.” Julie Orringer notes: “…In his lucid, empathetic portrayal of three generations of Philadelphia salesmen, Schwarzschild combines great storytelling with a profound understanding of the forces that bind us to one another. This is a wise and unforgettable book.”
Edward Schwarzschild was a recent Wallace Stegner fellow at Stanford, and teaches at SUNY Albany, with a joint appointment in the English Department and the NY State Writer’s Institute. He was a Helen Deutsch Fellow in Creative Writing at Boston University.
