Winter Hiking in the Adirondack and New Hampshire High Peaks

posted to the web on 2/9/2006 at 4:15 PM.

Carol Stone White will be at the Colgate Bookstore for a discussion of ADK High Peaks winter climbing.

Carol's book, Women With Altitude is written in chilling detail by twenty-nine women who reached the summits of all 46 Adirondack High Peaks in solar winter. The book discusses the stories of The Forty-Sixers and winter hiking in the High Peaks; as well as, the biographies, and photos of each hiker and a fascinating glimpse into the lives of this rare breed – Women Winter Forty Sixers.

Carol and her husband, Dave are avid hikers; they will present a slide show of winter climbing in the Adirondack and New Hampshire High Peaks.

Carol is the Conservation Chair of the Catskill club and Recording Secretary of the Adirondack 46ers Club. She became a Winter 46er in 1997. Her memberships include; the Four Thousand Footer Club of the White Mountains, the New England 4,000-Footers Club, and the 111ers of Northeastern USA. Carol is co-author of Catskill Day Hikes for All Seasons and editor of the Adirondack Mountain Club's Forest Preserve Series, Volume 8, Catskill Trails.

Dave White is a director of ADK and membership chairman of the Catskill 3500 Club. He has hiked 94 high peaks (over 4,000 feet) in the Northeast in winter.

Currently, the couple is completing climbs of New Hampshire's 48 4,000-foot-plus peaks in winter - only two to go!

"The deep snow and the cold of Adirondack winters combined with the remoteness of many of the mountain peaks creates a challenge of self-discovery. In this breathtakingly beautiful scenery, we watch as these women discover that they are extraordinary. We find, in each chapter, character being revealed and molded. We find hidden resources of strength and resilience. And we consider what hidden strengths may lie within us all."

– Tom Wheeler, President of the Adirondack Mountain Club
