Lover's Vows book coverAbout the play:
Adapted from the German play Das Kind von Liebe ("Child of Love") by August von Kotzebue, "Lover's Vows" was adapted by Elizabeth Inchbald for an English audience.  The play, which deals with sex outside marriage and illigitimate children, was first performed at Covent Garden in October 1798, and was an immediate success.

In Austen's novel Mansfield Park, young people of the Bertram family, together with their friends, choose the play to perform as a home theatrical.  Their preparations are interrupted, and their plans ultimately foiled, by the return of their disapproving patriarch Sir Thomas Bertram to the family home.
