What does all the computer talk mean?

Processor or CPU: The CPU is the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic instructions that drive a computer. APPLE has the G4 & G5 processors, and IBM compatibles have the Pentium 4 or Pentium M processors.

RAM: RAM is the "built-in" readable and writeable data storage that comes with (or can be added to) a computer. The machines sold through the Bookstore will have a minimum of 512MB RAM. The more RAM you have, the greater your computer’s ability to multi-task.

Hard Drive: A hard drive is part of a unit that stores and provides relatively quick access to large amounts of data. Today's Laptop computers typically come with a hard drive that contains 30GB or more of storage space. Most newer model desktop computers include 80GB or more hard drive storage space.

RW. DVD readers which are handy for watching DVD movies and are more powerful than normal CD-ROM drives. DVD+R & DVD-R Drives are now becoming more popular because of their mass storage capabilities in conjunction with lowered costs. Currently up to 8.5GB worth of data can be stored on dual layer DVD+R Drives .

Ethernet: Ethernet is the way that Colgate students connect to the Internet and e-mail. Colgate uses a 10/100-BASE-T system, which means we are sending and receiving files at 10 MBPS or mega-bits per second. It is 1,000 times faster than the fastest modem. Wireless Ethernet is now available at Colgate, and the university supports Wi-Fi Certified adapters which use the 802.11b Standard. Wireless access is available in many public areas of the campus, including the Colgate Libraries and the O’Connor Campus Center, and numerous student residences on Broad Street. Wireless is also available in the downtown area, with access points installed in the Bookstore and Barge Canal. Wireless has been implemented to augment, not replace, the wired network. If you want wireless flexibility, you should buy a wireless card in addition to, not instead of, your Ethernet card. 802.11b cards will work on campus.
